Field Service Representative
Field Service Representative at unspun
We’re looking for a hands-on, technically experienced Field Service Representative to support our Vega™ 3D weaving systems at our manufacturing partner in India. You will serve as unspun’s primary onsite technical representative at our manufacturing partner in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, near Naroda Road.
This role is ideal for someone who started closer to the equipment and has grown into broader project or technical leadership. You still have the hands-on mechanical experience to troubleshoot a machine, but you’re equally comfortable coordinating across teams, assessing priorities and risks, and giving leadership a clear picture of what’s happening.
When applying, use the word shark in your cover letter.
Why This Role Matters
As we scale Vega™ into production, we need someone onsite who can understand what’s happening in real time and communicate it clearly to teams thousands of miles away.
When something goes wrong, you’ll determine what’s happening, how urgent it is, what can be resolved locally, and when additional support is needed. You’ll gather the right information before escalating and keep teams aligned as issues evolve.
What You'll Do
Serve as the first line of technical support for Vega™ factory operations
Troubleshoot and perform mechanical and electromechanical repairs, adjustments, and recovery procedures
Assess and prioritize issues based on severity, production impact, available workarounds, and urgency
Investigate failures using machine logs, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), production and quality data, operator observations, photos, video, and other evidence
Coordinate troubleshooting and resolution across factory operations, engineering, and other teams
Provide clear daily updates to US teams on factory status, open issues, risks, and next steps
Lead weekly leadership updates covering factory health, trends, priorities, and potential issues
Support training, SOPs, troubleshooting procedures, and new processes on the factory floor
Identify recurring problems and opportunities to improve equipment, processes, documentation, and training
Who You Are
You have a strong hands-on technical foundation and have progressed into broader project, operations, or technical leadership responsibilities.
You’ve built, maintained, repaired, commissioned, or supported complex mechanical or electromechanical systems and know enough to recognize when something isn't behaving the way it should.
Since then, your responsibilities have grown. You may be a technical project manager, manufacturing engineer, field service engineer, technical program manager, or something similar. Whatever your title, you're now as comfortable leading a technical discussion and reporting to leadership as you are standing next to a machine figuring out why it stopped.
You don't create unnecessary noise when something goes wrong. You gather information, listen to the people closest to the problem, establish what you know, assess urgency, and communicate deliberately. As circumstances change, you adjust.
You know that good technical leadership isn't having the fastest answer in the room. It's helping the right people understand the problem, work through it together, and reach the right answer.
What Makes You a Great Fit?
5+ years of experience in field service, manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, automation, robotics, or a related technical environment
Recent hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical or electromechanical equipment in manufacturing, automation, robotics, or a similar environment
Experience that has grown into project, program, operations, or cross-functional leadership
Strong project management skills, including prioritization, issue and risk management, follow-through, and leadership reporting
Strong technical judgment and the ability to determine when to investigate, monitor, mitigate, or escalate
Experience using manufacturing data and metrics such as OEE to understand equipment performance and investigate issues
Ability to read technical drawings, diagrams, schematics, SOPs, and troubleshooting documentation
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to facilitate productive technical discussions
Composure and sound judgment during high-pressure production issues
Ability to communicate effectively in English and Gujarati or Hindi; proficiency in both local languages is strongly preferred
Education
Diploma, BE/B.Tech or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Automation, Manufacturing, or a related discipline
Strong practical experience is more important than a specific degree.
Language Requirements
Professional working English required
Professional working proficiency in Gujarati or Hindi required for effective factory-floor communication
Proficiency in both Gujarati and Hindi is strongly preferred
Preferred Experience
New Product Introduction (NPI) or production ramp experience
Lean Manufacturing, Lean Six Sigma, root cause analysis, or continuous improvement experience
Experience with industrial automation, controls, sensors, motors, drives, or PLCs
Basic Python, Linux, machine logs, diagnostic tools, or data analysis experience
Experience supporting technical teams across countries and time zones
Schedule
During initial training and production ramp, onsite days may be approximately 10 hours. Over time, onsite hours will vary based on production needs.
The factory operates across three shifts. You'll primarily support the first and second shifts and participate in on-call coverage. Because the US engineering team will sometimes need to collaborate directly on active issues, some US working hours will also be working hours for this role.
International Travel
You’ll travel to unspun's headquarters and micro-factory in Emeryville, California for approximately two weeks per quarter.
These visits will include training, technical collaboration, production development, and direct work with unspun’s engineering and leadership teams.
Why unspun?
We're not just another tech company - we're a team revolutionizing a trillion-dollar industry. Here's what makes us special:
Mission-Driven: This role keeps the Vega™ machines running — and uptime is the whole bet. Carbon reduction only works if on-demand weaving can actually compete with bulk overproduction on cost and speed. No uptime, no on-demand model, no carbon case.
Innovation at Scale: We're backed by top climate-tech VCs and working with major brands like Walmart
Amazing Team: Work with passionate experts who care about impact
Growth Opportunity: This is a ground-floor seat on Vega's production ramp — the path runs from factory-floor troubleshooting into broader technical leadership as the line scales, with direct visibility into both India operations and US engineering/leadership.
Comprehensive Benefits: Details below, but we take care of our team
Our Culture
We're relentless in pursuing our mission, intentional in our decisions, and fundamentally human in how we work together. We celebrate small wins, speak up to benefit many, and aren't afraid to make mistakes along the way.
Our Philosophy
We won't roll our eyes if your socks don't match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too. Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions. We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because "that's the way it's always been done."
We're a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We're aspiring chess masters and climbers, bakers and photographers. Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call the SF Bay Area home, with strong ties to Hong Kong. We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.
unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics. Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
